Sis, Rest Is Holy: How to Release Guilt and Find Peace

Listen to the podcast version here

If you’re a busy woman juggling motherhood, work, ministry, or all of the above, rest probably feels like a luxury you can’t afford. But sis… what if I told you that rest is not only allowed — it’s holy, healing, and God-approved?

Welcome to today’s message: Rest is Holy — Releasing Guilt and Finding Peace.

Why Rest Matters for Your Stress, Health, and Spiritual Life

There’s a difference between collapsing from exhaustion and intentionally choosing rest. One drains you. The other restores you — body, mind, and spirit.

For many of us, especially as women who take care of everybody, rest can feel selfish. But the truth is simple:

Rest is obedience — not rebellion.
Rest strengthens your faith.
Rest keeps your body alive and your spirit grounded.

Let’s break this down through the story, the science, and the spiritual truths behind rest.

My Story: The Night God Told Me to Be Still

There was a season in my life when I was constantly tired but never truly rested. Between homeschooling, running a business, managing the home, and being there for everyone else, my cup stayed empty.

One night, while journaling, the Lord whispered to my heart:

“Rest is not rebellion — it’s obedience.”

That moment changed everything for me. It reminded me that even Jesus took naps. If the Savior of the world rested, why do we act like we shouldn’t?

1. The Spiritual Purpose of Rest

Rest Shows Trust in God

Rest is an act of faith. When you pause, you are saying:

  • God, You are in control — not me.

  • My worth is not tied to productivity.

  • Peace is my portion.

Rest Is a Biblical Command, Not a Suggestion

God created Sabbath rest as a rhythm for our lives, not an optional add-on.

Exodus 33:14 reminds us: “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Sis, when you lay down your striving, you pick up His peace.

2. The Science of Stillness: How Rest Heals Your Body

We don’t just need rest spiritually — our bodies literally demand it. Chronic stress destroys your health.

High stress levels can lead to:

  • Elevated cortisol

  • High blood pressure

  • Inflammation

  • Fatigue

  • Anxiety

But the beautiful part? Rest naturally reverses these effects.

Here is a simple breathing practice to calm your nervous system:

  1. Inhale for 4 seconds

  2. Hold for 4

  3. Exhale for 6

  4. Whisper a prayer as you breathe

Just five minutes can quiet your mind, lower your stress, and open your heart to God.

3. Releasing the Guilt Around Rest

Sis, hear this with love: You do not have to earn rest. You need it.
Your family needs you to have it.
Your purpose needs you rested, not burnt out. Model peace for your family.

When you rest, you’re showing your children and your home what calm looks like. Rest is legacy.

Start with one “sacred pause” each day.

This could look like:

  • Sitting with tea in silence

  • Reading one scripture

  • Breathing deeply

  • Listening to worship

  • Journaling in gratitude

And if guilt rises? Speak this truth:

🕊️ “Rest is resistance to the world’s chaos.”

A Prayer for Holy Rest

“Lord, thank You for showing us that rest is not lazy — it’s holy. Help my sister release guilt and embrace stillness as an act of faith. Let her rest in Your peace today. Amen.”
